(★)(Eroticism in Meiji, Taisho and Showa Japan, 日本のエロスと近代性風俗画)(Mention of Japanese erotica conjures up a vivid image of a ´shunga´, a colored woodblock print from the Edo Period (1603-1867) of a kimonoed couple with outsized genitalia making love on tatami. Later Japanese erotic art has not received a modicum of the attention of the classical shunga. ´The Pillow Book of Spring and Laughter´ is the first book in English to showcase Japanese erotic pictures from 1860 through 1960. John Stevens introduces this erotica with wit, insight, and erudition.
