NOTA (★)(I hope readers will share my delight in discovering the extensive involvement of the peoples of East Asia in world affairs even before the beginning of recorded history. For some of them contact with the outside world has been constant for at least 4,000 years. For most of that time, their civilization and the sophistication of their management of foreign affairs surpassed that of the strangers who came in quest of their treasures. More recently, for a few hundred years, some fell victim to the superior discipline and technology of others, but the twentieth century has marked the recovery of their independence and their standing in the world community. Today, China and Japan claim a place among the world´s great powers. Many other states of East Asia experienced extraordinary growth late in the twentieth century, only to be set back by the financial crisis that swept the region in the late 1990s. Until then, the twenty-first century had promised to be Asia´s century. It may yet be. [Warren I. Cohen, June 2000] ◆Warren I.
