NOTA (★)(日本の文様)(Whether in architecture, interior decoration, pottery, metalwork, textiles or gardens, the design concepts of Japan´s artists and craftsmen have exerted a profound influence on form and ornamentation throughout the world. This, the first in a series of illustrated volumes that will explore and reveal the entire range of traditional Japanese design, is devoted to ´kachoo´, the ´bird-and-flower´ motif that permeates the history of Japanese art. In Japan this motif has for many centuries been an expression of the people´s sensitivity to nature, a reflection of the unity of man and his natural environment./ ´Kachoo´ designs are found on a tremendous variety of objects, ranging from Buddhist ritual implements, sword furnishings, and kimonos to paintings and simple earthenware dishes. To this motif, the authors have chosen superb examples that date from the seventh through the nineteenth century, many of which have been designated national treasures. The 42 full-color plates and 65 black-and-white illustrations are presented in chronological order, with explanatory notes by four distinguished Japanese art experts, each of whom is a leading authority in his field. Photography is by Mr. Bin Takahashi, Japan´s foremost photographer of art objects./ ◆The authors, Hirokazu Arakawa (荒川浩和), Gakuji Hasebe (長谷部楽爾), Seiji Imanaga (今永清士), and Hideo Okumura (奥村秀雄) are staff members of the Tokyo National Museum, and are specialists in the field of lacquer ware, ceramics, textiles, and metalwork respectively. Only their knowledge of and access to a wide range of art treasures throughout Japan has made this book possible.)
