NOTA (★)(The central idea of the Lotus Sutra is integration, that the teaching of three vehicles is an expedient to enable all to teach enlightenment (in the words of the classical commentators,´opening up and merging,´). We may think of the Lotus Sutra as the scripture of a religious movement within Mahayana Buddhism that set out to integrate within Buddhism the religion, thought, and culture of the peoples who lived in northwestern India around the beginning of the common era. This is what is generally called ´Ekayaana (One Vehicle)´ thought. This book verifies the historical background, together with the relevant social and cultural factors, that encouraged such religious harmony and fostered establishment of the idea of integration. It approaches those phenomena through not only philosophy but also historical science, archaeology, art history, paleography, epigraphy, and numismatics. ◆Keisho Tsukamoto, a professor emeritus at Tohoku University, is a specialist in Indology and the history of Buddhism. He served as dean of the Faculty of Buddhist Studies at Rissho University and later as president of Hosen Gakuen College. He is the author of ´Shoki-Bukkyoo-kyoodanshi no kenkyuu (A History of the Early Buddhist Order)´,´Ashooka-oo Hibun (Inscriptions of King Asoka)´,´Indo-Bukkyoo-himei no kenkyuu (A Comprehensive Study of the Indian Buddhist Inscriptions)´ in three parts and many other works. ▼CONTENTS : PART ONE : Social Basis of Forming the Lotus Sutra - 1.New Directions in Study of the Lotus Sutra, 2.Cultural and Religious Integration in Gandhaara, 3.Stupa Worship and the Lotus Sutra, 4.Bearers of the Lotus Sutra, PART TWO : Religious Unity in Theory and Practice - 5.Forming the Ideology of Religious Unity, 6.Predicting Buddhahood--Development of a Concept, 7.The So-called Seven Parables of the Lotus Sutra, PART THREE : Cult Integration in the Lotus Sutra - 8.Integration of Pure Land and Avalokitesvara Cults in the Lotus Sutra, 9.Integration of Dhaaranii and the Devadatta and Naaga Cults in the Lotus Sutra, 10.Propagation and Transmission of the Lotus Sutra)
