(*)(trans. by Rebecca Copeland) (★)(In ´The Story of a Single Woman´, Uno Chiyo, with many autobiographical details, charts the progress of a remarkable early-twentieth-century woman from birth to her mid-thirties. Kazue, a teacher, is exiled from her home at the age of eighteen, following an indiscreet love affair. After working for a while in Japanese-controlled China, she eventually finds herself in Tokyo, where she makes her way as a femme fatale. In search of some intrinsic meaning to her dissolute life, the heroine recounts one amorous escapade after another and brings us a delightfully insouciant tale of female discovery. 2.Uno Chiyo was born in 1897 in Iwakuni, Japan. She began writing in the early 1920s. At first best known for her scandalous life, and then for the stories that chronicled her amours, she came eventually to be recognized for her mastery of the Japanese narrative. Now in her nineties, she lives in Tokyo, where she also maintains a kimono boutique. 3.Rebecca Copeland was born in Fukuoka, Japan. She received her Ph.D. in Japanese literature at Columbia University in 1986 and is currently assistant professor at Washington University in St.Louis, Missouri. She has had the good fortune to meet Uno Chiyo, the subject of her dissertation, on several occasions.) |
