It was his only autobiographical novel and the first book of its kind to appear in modern Japan.／ ´Grass on the Wayside´ is the story of Kenzo, Soseki´s alter ego, an unhappy, self-centered man. The book is remarkable for the depth and the liveliness of its supporting characters ; no modern Japanese novelist ever wrote so movingly about his childhood, or created as complex a personality as Kenzo´s wife.／ Kenzo himself remains one of the most fully developed characters in Japanese fiction. In ´Grass on the Wayside´, Soseki subtly tempers his dramatic inclinations yet retains the passion for which his work is known.／ ◆Soseki Natsume (1867-1916) is considered the greatest novelist of the Meiji era and one of Japan´s finest modern writers. Educated at Tokyo Imperial University, he was sent to England in 1900 as a government scholar. he returned to Japan three years later and became a full-time writer in 1907, after teaching English literature at the Imperial University. As one of the first writers to be influenced by Western culture, his various works are read by virtually all Japanese, and contemporary Japanese writers continue to be affected by his ´oeuvre´.
