NOTA (★)(Translated by E. Dale Saunders)(Titulo original : 箱男 [Hako Otoko]/ Since its original publication in 1973,´The Box Man´ has been the consummate philosophical thriller. A fantastic and chilling novel, halfway between Beckett and Vonnegut, ´The Box Man´ is a hypnotic journal of an anonymous Box Man --a man who has retreated to the warped modern counterpart of the Hijiki´s ten-foot-square hut, a cardboard box on a busy downtown sidewalk. This is at once a portrait of an achingly vulnerable, intensely protective man who affirms himself by letting go of status, of ties to others, and, ultimately, of reality./ ◆Kobo Abe, born in Tokyo 1924, was raised in the Japanese colony in Mukden, Manchuria. he attended Tokyo University, from which he graduated in 1948 with a doctorate in medicine. Rather than follow in his father´s footsteps as a physician, he immediately began his brilliant career as a novelist and playwright with the publication of ´The Road Sign at the End of the Street´. Among his many notable works are ´The Crime of Mr. S. Karuma´, winner of the prestigious Akutagawa Prize in 1951,´The Woman in the Dunes´, which won the 1960 Yomiuri Prize for Literature,´The Face of Another [1966]´,´The Ruined Map [1969]´,´Inter Ice Age 4 [1970]´,´Secret Rendezvous [1979]´, and´The Ark Sakura [1984]´. Abe died in 1993.)
