Rather than follow in his father´s footsteps as a physician, he immediately began his brilliant career as a novelist and playwright with the publication of ´The Road Sign at the End of the Street´. Among his many notable works are ´The Crime of Mr. S. Karuma´, winner of the prestigious Akutagawa Prize in 1951,´The Woman in the Dunes´, which won the 1960 Yomiuri Prize for Literature,´The Face of Another [1966]´,´The Ruined Map [1969]´,´Inter Ice Age 4 [1970]´,´Secret Rendezvous [1979]´, and´The Ark Sakura [1984]´.
