NOTA (★)(Translated by Juliet Winters Carpenter)(Titulo original : Mikkai [密会, 1977]/ Secret Rendezvous, a Kafkaesque novel at once savagely funny and darkly nightmarish, takes us into a hospital system so complex that the patients must hire agents to deal with it. We enter into a maze of information-gathering technology from which no information can be extracted. Every room and hallway is bugged, and tapes of the patients´ trysts [collected to advance the cause of science] are sold by mail order as ´erotic accessories.´ Hopelessly lost in the labyrinth, the characters in ´Secret Rendezvous´ gradually become seduced by the hospital´s philosophy : to be truly civilized is to embrace disease./ ◆Kobo Abe [1924-1993] was raised in Manchuria, where his father taught in a Japanese medical college. As a young man, Abe was influenced by the works of Kafka, Heidegger, Nietzsche, and Poe. Abe published his first work,´Poems of an Unknown Poet,´ at his own expense. He has since won almost every literary prize Japan has to offer, and a film version of his novel ´The Woman in the Dunes´ won the Jury Prize at Cannes Film Festival. The author also directed his own theater company in Tokyo, for which he wrote plays.)
