(★)(This little book is a reprint, with many corrections by a friendly hand, of the main portion of what appeared under the title of ´Japan and the Japanese´, during the war with China, thirteen years ago. With all the cooling of my youthful love for my country, I cannot yet be blind to many fine qualities of her people ; and she is still the land, the only land, to whom I give ´my prayers, my hopes, my service, free.´ That I may still help to make the good qualities of my countrymen known to the outside world, --the qualities other than blind loyalty and bloody patriotism usually attributed to us-- is the aim of this, I presume, my last attempt in a foreign language.／ 本書は、日清戦争さなかの13年前に上梓した拙著「日本及び日本人(Japan and the Japanese)」の主要部分の再版である。原著にあった誤りは、ある友人が訂正してくれた。若き日の熱い愛国心はとうに冷めてしまったが、それでも日本人のもつ素晴らしい特性に目をつぶってはいられない。それに、日本が私の祖国であることに変わりはない。日本は、私が「わが祈り、わが希望、わが無償の奉仕」を捧げる唯一の国だ。わが同胞のよき特性ーーしばしば日本人に帰せられる盲目的忠誠や血塗られた愛国心とは別な特性ーーを、外なる世界に伝える一助となること。それが本書の目的である。おそらく、私が外国語で本を出すのはこれが最後であろう。／[from ´PREFATORY NOTE TO THE REVISED EDITION´, Kanzoo Uchimura, Kashiwagi, near Tokyo, January 8, 1908、改訂版はしがき、内村鑑三、1908年1月8日] ●More than fifty years after defeat at the end of World War II, Japan has emerged as a materially rich economic power. Rich as it is, however, there are many Japanese who lack spiritual fulfillment and are insecure about their future. They search for answers to eternal questions such as ´What is the morally correct way to live?´ or ´What kind of life should one lead?´ ／ Although schools may provide instruction in knowledge, there is a fundamental absence of even the most elementary moral guidance as to what is right and wrong and how to lead an honest life. In society at large, too, there is a tendency to value money-making most.／ Under such circumstances, it is hardly surprising that many fail to seriously question the meaning of life and abandon the pursuit of an ideal, humane existence, choosing instead an easier and more comfortable way. If this trend prevails, Japan will certainly become a spiritual desert. What then is necessary to make Japan a more positive and sound society? The answer is, I believe, for everyone to have a clear set of principles and to live according to those principles.／ ´Representative Men of Japan´ is the revised edition of ´Japan and the Japanese´, and was originally written and published in English at the end of the nineteenth century, when Japan´s relations with other countries was growing. The author, Kanzoo Uchimura, wanted Western people to know that ´there are such remarkable figures among my countrymen.´ His choices : Saigoo Takamori, Uesugi Yoozan, Ninomiya Sontok, Nakae Tooju, and Saint Nichiren.／ I believe their lives represent a certain set of universal human values. Learning about the lives of these five great men is one way to discover what it should mean to be truly human. Compare their lives with your own, and you may be able to live a more meaningful life.／ At the dawn of the new millennium, there is no more time for blind wandering. A clear philosophy is needed to make our lives more meaningful. Here, I believe, ´Representative Men of Japan´ will prove most useful.／ Fortunately, I have had this opportunity, thanks to Kodansha International Ltd., to supervise the translation of this important book into readable Japanese and reintroduce it to people in both East and West.
