Because his audience was mostly non-Christian, Endo was particularly sensitive to the manner in which the words of Jesus fell on the ears of his first listeners. Their reactions to him, their puzzlement, their affection, and their eventual abandonment of him are vividly and compassionately recounted. Endo´s Jesus is not limited to Japan, however. It is a timeless story, as freshly provocative to modern-day readers as it was to hearers in New Testament times.／ ◆Shusaku Endo [1923-1996], born in Tokyo and raised in Kobe, earned degrees in literature from Keio University[Japan] and the University of Lyon[France].
