Tsuda and his wife O-Nobu, is widely acknowledged to be the best novel of modern Japan. Although it remains unfinished because of Soseki´s death, it exposes the tangled web of lies and deception and the aversion to confrontation which mark the lives of the newly married couple and the early twentieth-century world in which they live. The majority of lies revolve around the fact that Tsuda does not love his new wife but is still in love with Kiyoko, the´light´of the story, now married to another man. O-Nobu is determined to make Tsuda love her, in the process challenging the stereotype of the submissive Japanese woman. Soseki probes deep into his principal characters, exposing layer after layer of egoism, and revealing the process whereby a man cuts himself off from his fellow men, including family members, and becomes incapable of love.／ ◆Soseki Natsume [1867-1916] is widely considered the foremost novelist of the Meiji period1868-1914. After graduating from Tokyo Imperial University in 1893, Soseki taught high school before spending two years in England on a Japanese government scholarship. He returned to lecture in English literature at the university. Numerous nervous disorders forced him to give up teaching in 1908 and he became a full-time writer for the Asahi newspaper.
