He began his training while in the U.S. Marine Corps, studying in Japan with Gogen Yamaguchi from 1956, and in Okinawa with Zenryo Shimabukuro, beginning in 1958. While in Okinawa, he also began the study of Okinawan weapon arts. Among other ranks, he holds sixth dan in each of Shito Ryu Karate, Junse Goshin Budo Jujitsu, and Kendo ; fifth dan in each of Okinawan Shorin Ryu Karate, Okinawan Kobudo, Bojitsu, and Iaido, and fourth dan in each of Jo Do Osae Aikido, Judo (U.S.J.A. and Kodokan), and Osae Junse Aikido. He is the author of ´Japan´s Ultimate Martial Art : Jujitsu Before 1882, The Classical Japanese Art of Self-Defense´, also from Tuttle Publishing.)
