(★)(What is education and what is indoctrination? How do we distinguish between the two in elementary, secondary, and university education? When is indoctrination defensible, if at all? These intriguing problems are tackled by Michio Nagai in this thought-provoking study of what he calls ´The Indoctrination Controversy.´ The author approaches the subject from two viewpoints : sociological and philosophical. In the first he deals with the question of how indoctrination is involved in school education. The role of the teacher is examined and contrasted with that of the university professor, and the particular cultural ethos and environment in which teaching takes place are discussed. The second approach is mainly concerned with such questions as ´Is all teaching indoctrination?´ and ´What is the relationship between teaching and indoctrination?´ and draws upon the writings of Mannheim, Weber, Dewey, Morris, and others. The author emphasizes that the canons of science are independent and must be pursued separately from social realities. Without confining himself to any specific country, but with an emphasis on the role of education in democratic and totalitarian societies, the author raises such issues as the content of education, its role in social reform, its cultural context, and the position of the teacher. ◆Michio Nagai has served for many years as professor of education at Tokyo Institute of Technology. He has also been an editorial writer for Asahi Shimbun and most recently has been Minister of Education, Science and Culture, a post that has allowed him to put into practice his concept of education.) |
