NOTA (★)(This book profiles the lives and work of ten men and women who played important roles in the development of educational thought and the establishment of an educational system in modern Japan. Mostly born in the last third of the nineteenth century, they were part of Japan´s great opening to the West after the Meiji Restoration. As the founders of schools and the makers of policies, they believed in the power of education to bring about social and political change, and many worked to open school doors to women and others who once were denied formal education. Several of them studied in the West, and a number were strongly influenced by Christianity. They include Mori Arinori, Japan´s first Minister of Education ; Fukuzawa Yukichi,´Renaissance man´ of early modern Japan and founder of Keio University ; Naruse Jinzo, who established Japan´s first university for women ; Shimonaka Yasaburo, a founder of the Japan Teachers´ Union ; Sawayanagi Masataro, who adopted ´progressive´ pupil-centered teaching methods from the West ; and Nambara Shigeru, whose pacifism earned him respect as the first postwar president of the University of Tokyo. These biographies, written by present-day scholars, illuminate the history of education in modern Japan through the lives of ten of its pioneers. Benjamin C. Duke is Professor of Comparative and International Education at International Christian University, Tokyo, and author of ´Japan´s Militant Teachers´ and ´The Japanese School.´ [Contents] 1.Fukuzawa Yukichi〜Jyunosuke Yasukawa, 2.Mori Arinori〜Terumichi Morikawa, 3.Naruse Jinzo〜Kuni Nakajima, 4.Uchimura Kanzo〜Kiyoko Takeda Cho, 5.Nitobe Inazo〜Kiyoko Takeda Cho, 6.Tsuda Ume〜Takako Yamazaki, 7.Sawayanagi Masataro〜Hiroshi Mizuuchi, 8.Shimonaka Yasaburo〜Akira Nakano, 9.Nambara Shigeru〜Masao Terasaki, 10.Munakata Seiya〜Muneaki Mochizuki)
