NOTA (★)(The global industrial system has fundamentally and irreversibly changed in the past decade. Information technology, with renewable knowledge resources as the critical ingredient, has replaced conventional industrial technology, relying on non-renewable resources, as the main driving force of a new order. As knowledge resources are more universally distributed, the number of nations playing an active technological role is steadily increasing. And, in electrnonics, the basic technology of the information age, Japanese industry and research institutes have now emerged as world leaders, dramatically altering patterns of competition and the flow of technology./ The author, in this revised and expanded edition, presents a vivid picture of Japan´s electronics industry and its technological development over the last ten-year period. He explores the reasons for the industry´s ascendancy and shows why technological innovation must be regarded as the main factor of its comparative advantage. And, for the purposes of future prognosis, he includes a carefully documented first-hand analysis of those features of Japanese society, business organization and enterprises system that will determine the future development patterns of Japanese electronics technology./ ◆Gene Gregory is Professor of International Business at Sophia University in Tokyo.
