NOTA (★)(Its Relevance to Asian Development)(What is the significance of agricultural development in Japan during a century of modern economic growth? Does the Japanese experience have any relevance to the problems that Asian farmers are now facing? These basic questions underlie the studies in this volume./ History is amirror on which the image of the present comes into focus by comparison with similarities and differences of the past. In this volume we have tried to construct such a mirror, in the form of a positive economic analysis of the long-term growth of Japanese agriculture, that may facilitate a correct understanding of the nature and magnitude of the problems of agricultural development in Asia today./ The present volume represents a final report of a research project entitled ´Science and Agricultural Progress : The Japanese Experience´, which was conducted during the period 1972-1974. The project was supported by a generous grant from the Rockefeller Foundation to the University of Minnesota Economic Development Center. It was an extension of research conducted by the author with Vernon W. Ruttan at the University of Minnesota (the results were published in Hayami and Ruttan, ´Agricultural Development : An International Perspective´, Johns Hopkins University Press, 1971)./ Besides the author and the three associate authors, Masao Kikuchi and Keijiro Otsuka participated in the project. The six of us worked closely. Each step of research was examined carefully through group discussions. Thus, all of us contributed more or less to each chapter of the book./ The book draws on a number of earlier studies by the authors extending back almost two decades. Especially, it draws heavily on the Hayami-Ruttan volume cited earlier and on Yujiro Hayami, ´Nihon Nogyo no Hatten Katei (The Process of Agricultural Development in Japan)´. The previously published results were, however, largely revised and reorganized for this volume./[from ´PREFACE´, Yujiro Hayami, Los Banios, Philippines, January 1975]/ ▼CONTENTS/ ●1.INTRODUCTION ●PART 1 : CHRONOLOGY OF GROWTH/2.Trends in Output, Inputs, and Productivities/3.Institutional Aspects of Agricultural Development/ ●PART 2 : ACCOUNTING FOR GROWTH/4.Sources of Long-Term Productivity Growth/5.Technology Diffusion and Growth Phases/ ●PART 3 : PUBLIC FACTORS IN GROWTH/6.Public Investments and Social Returns to Agricultural Research/7.Role of Land Infrastructure in Agricultural Development/ ●PART 4 : SIGNIFICANCE OF GROWTH/8.Implications of the Japanese Experience/)
