NOTA (*)(trans. by Burton Watson)(★´On The Japanese Classics´is a series of conversations and appreciations between Daisaku Ikeda and Makoto Nemoto in which they discuss the great works of Japanese literature that are esteemed throughout the world as classics. Their talks center on the ´Man´yooshuu [Collection of Ten Thousand Poems, c. late eighth century]´, the ´Kojiki [Record of Ancient Matters, 712]´, the ´Genji monogatari [The Tale of Genji, c. early eleventh century]´, and the ´Konjaku monogatari [Tales of Once Upon a Time, c. 1120]´. The participants try not to impose any broad framework of interpretation upon the works or to arrive at any systematic conclusions concerning them. Rather, they attempt to define the particular worth and appeal of each of these classics, to discover some of the ways in which each is related to the life and thought of the time, and to suggest what significance each may hold for our own age. Although not specialists in Japanese literature, these men bring to the Japanese classics a superb knowledge of Japanese and Chinese history and literature, as well as of Buddhism, and a freshness of approach and understanding that make these classics alive and brilliant. Their book, it almost goes without saying, contains a wealth of very interesting revelations. ◆Daisaku Ideda was born in Tokyo in 1928. After completing his formal schooling with his graduation from junior college, at the age of nineteen he became a member of Sooka Gakkai, where he continued his education under its president Joosei Toda. In 1960 he succeeded Mr. Toda as president of Sooka Gakkai, which works for the promotion of education, culture, and peace and has a membership of ten million in Japan and half a million in other countries. In 1979 Mr. Ikeda was given the position of Honorary President. The author of numerous works in Japanese, Mr. Ikeda has compiled a six-volume encyclopedia of Buddhist philosophy. His books, which have been translated and read around the world, include ´The Toynbee-Ikeda Dialogue´and ´Buddhism, the Firat Millennium.´ Makoto Nemoto, a specialist in Chinese hitory, was a professor at Waseda University until his retirement. At the time of the conversations recorded in this book, he was a professor at Sooka University. His many writings include ´Sensei Chuugoku to sono hooshisoo no tokushitsu [The Characteristics of Legal Thought in Autocratic China]´ and ´Chuusei Chuugoku [Medieval China].´ Mr. Nemoto died in 1976.)
