NOTA (★)"Okagami[大鏡]" es una cronica historica que relata sobre el reinado y el poder de Fujiwara Michinaga(966-1027). Presented here in a new and complete translation is the Japanese classic´Okagami´, an historical tale that mirrors a man´s life and the times in which he lived. Dating from the late eleventh or early twelfth century, it focuses on Fujiwara Michinaga, the leading political figure in the great family that dominated the court during most of the Heian period. Its anonymous author attempts to identify the factors responsible for Michinaga´s brilliant career and, in doing so, creates an important literary work, a prime historical source, and a social document of immense value. The narrative is composed of five parts : the Preface, which brings together the narrators ; the Imperial Annals, which record the reigns of Emperors from 850 to 1025 ; the Biographies of twenty Fujiwara ministers of state ; the Tales of the Fujiwara Family, their leaders and their shrines and temples ; and the Tales of the Past, which deal with festival origins, poems and poets, elegant events and strange happenings, Emperors of the past, members of the Minamoto family, and Buddhist preachers. Supplementing the translation are an introduction and appendixes containing translation from other´Ookagami´texts, a chronology of the Ookagami period, and a brief outline of the Fujiwara role in Japanese court history. Helen Craig McCullough is Professor of Oriental Languages at the University of California, Berkeley, and translator of other important Japanese works.)
