(★)(The dilemmas which arise in every bioethical decision made by today´s Japanese people are profound, as they are structurally derived from the long history of Asian culture and religion, which have, in a mere couple of decades, been swept over by Western science and culture./ Traditionally, Japan is typical of all Asian countries, in that it almost intrinsically expresses ´Wa´ [和], a harmonious mentality originating from the early days of its national development./ Indeed, it is well known that the ´Wa´ ethos pervades Japanese culture and mentality even today. The historical development of ´Wa´ in Japan is extensively described in this book, and its reflection in a variety of religions and literary genres, including the long-lived ´tanka (short poem)´, is explained./ ◆Dr. Norihiko Aoki, B.A., Ph.D., is a graduate of the Faculty of Medicine, Kyoto University (1963). He specialized in endocrinology and metabolic diseases and was a full professor at Kinki University, Osaka, until 2007. He also graduated from the Faculty of Literature, Kyoto University (1972), taking courses in philosophy and religion under the mentorship of the late Professor Yoshinori Takeuchi. Dr. Aoki has been a poet since his youth and has published four anthologies of ´tanka (Japanese traditional short poem)´, entitled ´Bright Wall (Hikaru kabe)´, ´Like Praying (Inori-no-gotoku)´, ´Spontaneously Sounding (Nariizuru)´, and ´To My Homeland Shinano (Mikomokaru)´. All these three seemingly different careers have been mutually linked by the motivation to form a whole, and this life-long intent has culminated in this unique book based on the Asian viewpoint, written with strong conviction./ ▼CONTENTS/ ●CHAPTER I : The Background of Bioethics and Environmental Ethics/ ●CHAPTER II : DNA and Life/ ●CHAPTER III : Greek Culture and Its Significance for the Later Development of Science and Ethics/ ●CHAPTER IV : Japanese Religion/ ●CHAPTER V : Culture and Ethics/ ●CHAPTER VI : Science and Ethics for their Proper Orientation/ ●CHAPTER VII : Environmental Ethics, Environmental Hormones and Various Current Problems/) |
