NOTA (★)(Featuring over 60 models and 1,000 diagrams by the master 1.This is the first comprehensive survey in English of the work of Akira Yoshizawa, who is widely acknowledged as the father of modern origami. It presents a rare collection of over 60 extraordinary models folded by the master himself, together with drawings and texts from his private collection. Yoshizawa was an innovator who played a seminal role in the´renaissance´ of origami in modern times. He served as a bridge between the past and the present, between the ancient Japanese craft and the development of origami into a modern art form, both in terms of inventing new techniques and in preserving traditional forms of origami. Above all, he elevated origami to the status of an art form around the world. It is largely because of his work that origami today is practiced widely and has such a huge following. The modern origami notational system of diagrams and arrows showing how models are folded was largely developed by Akira Yoshizawa. This book features over 1,000 original drawings by the artist, showing exactly how he used this system of notation. It also contains an introduction by Robert J. Lang, one of the leading Western exponents of the art, and an exposition of the master´s philosophy by his widow, Kiyo Yoshizawa. This book includes faithful English translations of Yoshizawa´s writings on origami created for Japanese children whom he wished to inspire by granting free rein to their imagination. Photographs of the models were taken expressly for the book by Kazuo Hamada, a leading Japanese art photographer. 2.Born in 1911, Akira Yoshizawa is the acknowledged father of modern origami. The publication of his collection of models in the early 1950s caused a major sensation. In 1954, he founded the International Origami Center in Tokyo. In 1955, his original works were exhibited for the first time at a show in Amsterdam, an enormously successful event that introduced him to the West. It was during these years that he devised a system of notation based on a series of symbols and graphic signs indicationg various types of folds, thus creating a method that has been universally adopted by origami artists. In subsequent decades, Yoshizawa folded and taught origami, published books on the subject and participated in numerous international events. As his fame spread throughout the world, he came to be seen as the pre-eminent representative of the art and a pioneer of the techniques used by all modern origami artists. Yoshizawa died on March 14, 2005, his 94th birthday.)
