Originating in the Edo period[1603-1868] Kyoto, ´kyogashi [lit. ´Kyoto Confectionery´]´ is characterized by an extremely refined level of artistry, making it remarkably unique even on a global scale. Rimpa is a major stream of Japanese painting, with its roots in the works of the Edo period artists Tawaraya Sotatsu and Ogata Korin. Both kyogashi and Rimpa reflect the sophistication of Japanese sensitivity, cultivated through the ages of living in harmony with Nature. A highly intellectual form of art, they were established under the influence of the long history of Imperial culture and the aesthetic form of tea ceremony. The purpose of this book is to illuminate the depth of Japanese culture while introducing various Rimpa-themed kyogashi.) |
