(★)(This book cuts across a wide swathe of genres, centered on painting, sculpture, prints, and crafts, but also including photography, design, performing arts, flower arranging, and calligraphy, making it possible to grasp the totality of modern and contemporary visual arts in Japan ; although it sounds like self-promotion, no other book has been able to offer this. The process of selecting works of art for inclusion involved cooperation between the supervising editor, writers, other members of the editorial team, and members of the Tokyo Art Club such as myself. Certainly there are readers who will take exception to some of selections and wonder why other material has been omitted, so we ask for your understanding of the challenges we faced in undertaking such a vast project. The thought of readers having access to this book and finding pleasure as they utilize it in a variety of ways brings satisfaction to the editors and writers. We are especially excited by the prospect of members of the international arts community, who have a special interest in modern and contemporary Japanese art, or who will develop a fascination in the years to come, being able to use this book in an international (English) edition. Almost two decades have passed since the twenty-first century has begun. We hope that this publication will play a role in helping Japanese culture and art be increasingly understood and appreciated in the future, at a global level.
