Widely anthologized in Japan, where fans hold an annual festival in his honor, Nakajima is considered a master of a sub-genre of Japanese fictional works that take Ancient China as their subject, with stories based on folk tales, legends, and historical figures. Nakajima´s stories first appeared in Japanese periodicals in 1942 and 1943, promising a potentially rich and long career, given his extensive knowledge and skills. He died tragically of pneumonia complicated by severe asthma on the island of Palau in 1942. In masterful translations by Paul McCarthy and Nobuko Ochner, these are the first of his works to appear in English. ◆Atsushi Nakajima is known in Japan for his meticulously researched short stories based on Ancient China. Nakajima is something of a cult classic in Japan, where the genre of stories based on Ancient China is as well developed as tales based on Ancient Greece and Rome are in English speaking countries. This is the first collection of his works to appear in English translation. Paul McCarthy is Professor of Comparative Culture at Surugadai University in Hanno, Saitama, Japan. He holds a Ph.D. in East Asian Languages and Civilizations from Harvard University, and has taught Japanese, Anglo-American, and Comparative Literature at universities in Japan and the United States. He is the translator of Tanizaki´s ´Childhood Years´ ; the award-winning ´A Cat, a Man, and Two Women´, as well as ´The Gourmet Club : A Sextet (with Anthony Chambers)´ and Kanai Mieko´s ´The Word Book´. Nobuko Miyama Ochner is Associate Professor of Japanese at the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures, University of Hawaii at Manoa in Honolulu.
