NOTA (★)(●ABOUT THE COLLECTION/Large collections of Japanese armor are rare in the West. To the author´s knowledge there are no publications that give anything other than the briefest details of any of the many thousands of Japanese armors that exist in the private and public collections of America and Europe. It is hoped that this catalog, detailing the collection of William A. Galeno, M.D., will start a trend and encourage others to make available details of the treasures they hold in custody./ ●SOME NOTES ON THE CATALOG/Early armor is virtually unknown outside of Japan and is beyond the scope of this simple introduction. Throughout the thousand years or so during which armor was worn a bewildering variety of styles and types of armor evolved. Some of these styles persisted with only minor changes for centuries. Indeed, many families chose to have similar armors made for successive generations./ It is common to find armors assembled during the nineteenth century incorporating helmet bowls amde some four hundred years earlier. Evidence suggests that even the most famous armorers made use of ready-made components, lacquering and lacing them to match the remainder of an armor. As a consequence, almost all armors incorporated elements whose origins were diverse and from widely separated periods. Dating an armor is therefore difficult. Many of the dates given in this catalog are tentative and generally err toward the earliest that a piece might have been made. In many cases the dates given are generalized into periods : Muromachi/1333-1573, Momoyama/1573-1603, Edo/1603-1868, [from ´PREFACE´])
