NOTA (★)((英文版)「海洋アジア vs 大陸アジア : 日本の国家戦略を考える」(2016)/ Translated by Paul Warham (Published in association with the Japan Publishing Industry Foundation for Culture)/ The tectonic shifts in today´s geopolitical landscape are having a dramatic impact in Asia, where the rise of China presents a growing challenge to the US-led order that has maintained peace and stability in the region since the end of the Cold War./ In this book, Shiraishi Takashi, one of Japan´s leading authorities on Asia and national policy planning, explores the deeper background and long-term trends behind the diplomatic challenges and dilemmas now facing Japan, China, ASEAN, and the United States./ The book relies on the author´s expert knowledge of the region´s postwar history to shed light on the underlying causes of events and developments that we read about in the daily news. One key question he addresses : What accounts for the divide between the maritime states and the countries of mainland Asia?/ Shiraishi´s incisive analysis, combining a discussion of international relations with a consideration of Asia´s varying political cultures, sheds light on current affairs in the vast region from the Pacific to the Indian Ocean and beyond./ ◆Shiraishi Takashi is chancellor of the Prefectural University of Kumamoto and also professor emeritus at Japan´s National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS). He previously served as president of GRIPS and president of the Institute of Developing Economies (IDE-JETRO), among many other senior posts./ In 2007 he was awarded the Medal with Purple Ribbon, and he was appointed to Japan´s Order of Cultural Merit in 2016. In 2017 he received the Medal of Bintang Jasa Utama from Indonesia./ His award-winning publications include ´An Age in Motion (1990, recipient of the Ohira Masayoshi Asia Pacific Award)´ and ´Umi no teikoku (Empire of the Seas, 2000, recipient of the Yomiuri-Yoshino Sakuzo Prize).´ His recent works include ´The Rise of Middle Classes in Southeast Asia (2008, coedited with Pasuk Phongpaichit)´ and ´Chuugoku wa Higashi-Ajia o dou kaeruka (How Is China Changing East Asia? 2012, coauthored with Caroline Sy Hau)´.)
