NOTA ()(Titulo original : CƓŖ [Umi to Dokuyaku], Translated by Peter Owen)(LNI-0280Les mismo libro.)(LThe Sea and PoisonL is a novel treating an actual incident so horrific that it seared itself indelibly into EndoLs conscience --the slow and methodical wartime vivisection, with absolutely no anesthesia or other amelioration, of an American captive by a team of Japanese doctors. This powerful novel describes the disintegration of a Japanese doctor who is obliged to participate in the vivisection of prisoners of war. Haunted by his wartime memory and the shame of his collusion, he searches desperately for relief from his overweening guilt and for meaning in his continuing existence.^@Shusaku Endo[1923-1996] was the most popular of the great twentieth century Japanese writers in Japan. Known for his rough humor and the unwavering moral convictions he derived from his Catholic faith, he focused his writing on the moral issues facing each individual within society as well as those facing society as a whole. He graduated from Keio University with a degree in French literature and subsequently spent several years in postgraduate study in Lyons. Among the literary prizes he was awarded are the Akutagawa, the Mainichi Cultural, the Shincho, and the Tanizaki prizes.)
