This revised edition features a new and substantive introduction by the author that is an up-to-date analysis of Japan´s contemporary and deepening crisis that only confirms McCormack´s astute and penetrating analysis in the first edition. As Norma Field notes in her foreword to this new edition, it is to McCormack´s great credit that he diagnosed so well Japan´s condition five years ago in the title ´The Emptiness of Japanese Affluence´, when it was still possible to refer to Japanese affluence without irony. ´Now that that is no longer the case, his careful analyses are all the more compelling : for we must acknowledge that Japan once provided world history with an astonishing successful version of capitalism.
