NOTA (š)(A few years ago the author was strongly pressed to open a lecture on rice cultivation in the magazine LNogyo oyobi Engei (Agriculture and Horticulture)L, a magazine most widely read by Japanese agricultural scientists, teachers, specialists, agents and advanced farmers. The book does not consist of the many results of researches which were obtained in the past by his many predecessors at home and abroad, but chiefly of the results of his own experiments which he conducted based on his own original ideas and obtained by the sweat of his own brow and of his assistants, so that the book is marked by his own strong individuality. The author regretted for a long time the fact that many books on rice cultivation seemed to be mere collections of individual phenomenon or findings not only unrelated with each other but also not considered from the viewpoint of the whole growth process of the rice plant ; there were few books which intended to clarify systematically the whole growth process of the plant from the viewpoint of the yield determination. The author has strong doubts as to what extent the above demand is satisfied by this book, but the readers will easily realize that this book is not a Lproduct of scissors and pasteL and the individuality of the author breathes from all the pages.^@¥CONTENTS^@œChapter I : Outline^@œChapter II : When the number of panicles is determined^@œChapter III : How the number of panicles is determined^@œChapter IV : How the number of panicles can be predicted^@œChapter V : How the number of panicles can be increased^@œChapter VI : When and how the panicle of rice is formed^@œChapter VII : How the stages of development in the rice plant can be distinguished^@œChapter VIII : When the number of spikelets per panicle is determined^@œChapter IX : How the number of spikelets per panicle is determined^@œChapter X : How the number of spikelets per panicle can be predicted^@œChapter XI : How the number of spikelets per panicle can be increased^@œXII : How to distinguish fully ripened grains^@œXIII : When the percentage of ripened grains is determined^@œXIV : How the percentage of ripened grains is determined^@œXV : How the percentage of ripened grains can be predicted^@XVI : How the percentage of ripened grains can be increased^@œChapter XVII : When the weight of 1,000 kernels is determined^@œChapter XVIII : How the weight of 1,000 kernels is determined^@œXIX : How the weight of 1,000 kernels can be predicted^@œXX : How the weight of 1,000 kernels can be increased^@œXXI : How the yield is determined^@œXXII : How the yield can be predicted^@œXXIII : How the yield can be increased)
