NOTA (š)(1.The subject of this book is the pair of fine picture-scrolls entitledLSong of Lasting SorrowmChoogonka gakannLin the Chester Beatty LibraryLs Japanese collection. Created by the Kyoto Kano School master Sansetsum1590-1651nin the early Edo period, the painting depicts the tragic love story of the Tang emperor Minghuang and his beloved concubine Yang Guifei, as told by the great Tang poet Bai Juyim772-846 ; Hakurakuten in Japanesenin his epic ballad,LSong of Lasting SorrowL, composed in 806-07. This Chinese subject has had an intriguing history in Japan, ever since it was first mentioned in theLTale of Genjimc.1008nL, but the style of the painting also compels deep interest, opening a window on how Sansetsu organised his painting workshop and raising questions about the artistLs pictorial sources in China. Following a recently published facsimile of the Chogonka scrolls, entitledLKano Sansetsu ga Choogonka gakanmThe Song of Lasting Sorrow picture-scrolls by Kano SansetsunL, this is the first book in English devoted to exploring these issues. The volume is part of a continuing project to publish the Chester Beatty LibraryLs renowned collection of Japanese paintings and picture-booksmNara ebonn. 2.The Chester Beatty Library, one of IrelandLs national cultural institutions, is an art museum and library which houses the great collection of manuscripts, miniature paintings, prints, drawings, rare books and decorative arts assembled by Sir Alfred Chester Beattym1875-1968n.
